Paupers 2006-2012

Digital colour prints on archival paper
100 x 150 mm (4 x 6 in)

Paupers 2006-2012 are posthumous portraits of people declared by the state to be paupers. In South Africa unknown cadavers are held by the state for a minimum of 30 days, often for longer, even for years. During this time it is assumed that the deceased's next of kin are being traced. When no family is found or when family has no interest or means to bury their deceased the cadaver is declared a pauper and buried by the state in an unmarked grave.
